Kathryn F. Wood

Funeral services for Kathryn F. Wood, 89, were held Saturday April 28, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at the Ackerman United Methodist Church in Ackerman. Her grandson, Rev. Shane Sunn of Denver, Colorado officiated the service. A eulogy was also presented by her grandson Brent Wade Wood of Houston, TX. Her other grandsons served as pallbearers. Burial followed in Enon Cemetery in Ackerman, MS. Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman, MS was in charge of all arrangements. Mrs. Wood passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012 at her home of sixty two years in Ackerman with loved ones beside her. Mrs. Wood was born in Oakland, MS June 8, 1922 to Dudley Hobson Ford and Christia Mae Allen Ford. She was the second born of eleven children. Nine of whom survived to adulthood. Kathryn graduated from Oakland High School, Oakland, MS, where she was a member of the 4-H Club and Glee Club. As a high school senior, she worked for the National Youth Association. Her duties included being responsible for setting up and cleaning the auditorium and music hall for performances. After high school, Kathryn traveled to Memphis, TN and got her “second” job at Sears and Roebuck, Inc. Shortly afterwards, she met her future husband, Jasper Floyd Wood, Sr., who was working in the CCC Camp. They married in December of 1941 and moved to Ackerman, MS. Much of her life was then dedicated to her husband, children, and other family members as needed. Kathryn was an exceptional seamstress, home decorator, cook, gardener, wife, and mother. After the death of her husband, she spent lots of time knitting, crocheting and tried her hand at some oil paintings which were quite outstanding for an amateur. Kathryn was also involved in her local church where she prepared the bulletin for several years. Kathryn was a retired bookkeeper formerly employed with the Choctaw County Hospital and the Choctaw County Superintendent of Education’s office. Music was an integral part of her life as she and her husband loved to dance together. They occasionally traveled to the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN to keep their dancing skills in tune. Sing alongs and family gatherings were popular in their home especially during the holidays. She also loved nature, especially bird watching. She and her husband would often spend many hours out enjoying nature together. Kathryn was a productive, strong, open-minded, life-filled, artistic, jolly person until her last battle with meningioma brain tumors which left her paralyzed on her left side and quite helpless. Her priority in life was God and her family. She taught her children to be creative in their thinking and to never say “I can’t.” She was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Floyd Wood, Sr.; one granddaughter, Dana Melissa Wood; three brothers and four sisters. She is survived by her five children, Farrah Wood, Jasper Floyd Wood, Jr., Linda McCulloch, and Ronny Wood, all of Ackerman, and Lesli Wood Wilson of Baton Rouge, LA. She also leaves eight grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren,; two step grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by one sister, Lois Raiford of Olive Branch, MS; two brothers, Kenneth Ford of Ackerman, MS and Charles Irby Ford of Hernando, MS and numerous nieces and nephews.
