The Choctaw Plaindealer
As the spring break holidays take place in Choctaw County schools, the baseball teams have begun their regular season schedule with a breathtaking pace.
The Ackerman Indians started their season by participating in the Weir Classic on Feb 24-25. In their opening game, the Indians faced host and in-county rival Weir Lions. The Indians would come up short, losing by a score of 2-1 to the Lions. The Indians would go to the losers’ bracket to face Pelahatchie the next day. In a hard-fought game, the Indians defeated the Chiefs 6-5.
The Indians would go on to travel to play Calhoun City on Feb. 28. The road-weary Indians would not be able to match up with Wildcats and would lose 19-2.
Next up for the Indians was an opportunity to host their tournament on Mar. 3. The Indians would play two games on that day, the first against West Lowndes. The Indians would go on to clinch a 9-4 victory over the Panthers. Their next opponent would be Choctaw Central. The Indians would win this game as well, by a score of 5-4.
Ackerman’s next challenge would be a home contest against Ethel on Mar. 6. The Tigers would go on to defeat the Indians 11-9 on their home field. The Indians would turn righrt back around on mar. 8 to host Pisgah in division play. The Indians would get their first division win of the season as they went on to a 7-2 victory over the Dragons.
The Indians next challenge is over the spring break as the team will travel to Pensacola, Fl to play against some of the top teams in Florida. Scores for these games will be in next week’s edition of the Choctaw Plaindealer.
French Camp Panthers
French Camp began their season by participating in the J.Z. George Classic Tournament on Feb. 24-25. The Panthers’ first opponent in the tournament was Yazoo City. The Panthers went on the easily dominate Yazoo City 10-0. Up next in tournament play was West Tallahatchie. The Panthers repeated the same success, defeating the Choctaws 10-2.
French Camp’s next game would be on the road against Ethel on Mar. 1. The tables would turn on the Panthers on this night, losing to the Tigers 12-2. The Panthers would come back home to host their first division game of the season against West Lowndes on Mar. 6. In a close game, the panthers would capture the division win by a score of 5-4.
Up next for the Panthers will be a division game against local rival Weir on Mar. 20 after Spring Break. Scores for this game will be posted in the Mar. 28 edition of the Choctaw Plaindealer.
The Weir Lions would open their season by hosting their annual tournament on Feb. 24-25. After defeating Ackerman in their first game, the Lions would go on to face rival Eupora on Feb. 25. The Lions would not be able to match the scoring pace of the Eagles, and would lose 12-6.
The Lions would go on to participate in the Ackerman Tournament on Mar. 3. The first game for the Lions was a match-up against Choctaw Central. After a close game, the Lions would fall short to the Warriors 8-6. The Lions’ next tournament game would be against Noxubee County. Weir woukld get back on the winning track as they defeated the Tigers 15-3.
After the tournament, the Lions would play their first division game of the season against the Class 1A defending champion Nanih Waiya Warriors. The defending champs would play up their namesake as they defeated the Lions 15-0.
